WKNDEXPO, a new series of one-weekend exhibitions in Electron, Breda

Current MFA participant Maurice Nuiten has started a new series of short presentations at de Kopse Kant in Electron. So far he invited Piffin Duvekot, Thom Brand and Helga Jakobson to make a presentation.

To Whom It May Concern, Raphael Langmair solo at P/////AKT, Amsterdam

MFA graduate Raphael Langmair (2012) has a solo presentation at P/////AKT, Amsterdam – opening saturday march 12, 2016  20.00 -24.00 h.

In 2016 P/////AKT is focusing on the conceptual legacy of Marcel Broodthaers’ 1964 work Le Pense-Bête and its relevance in current discourse. P/////AKT will outline six aspects of Le Pense-Bête, each of which comprises a solo exhibition, a public event, and an essay. The second aspect deals with transition, gesture and authenticity. The act of rendering his collected poems illegible by casting them in plaster is exemplary for the transitory qualities of Broodthaers’ artistic practice.

Von Holden Studio opens the exhibition season with ‘ALL’, solo exhibition of the Sicilian artist Adriano La Licata (Palermo, 1989), enhanced by the curatorial support of artist Francesco De Grandi, one generation older than him and always attentive to the nursery of artists in the capital.

The exhibition, which opens Thursday, December 17, 2015 at 19:00, is composed by a clear body of work, 3 key moments of the latest research of the artist. It has been preferred to focus on a few elements as specific as fragile, along the balance of the biographical abstraction. Between documentation and ambiguity, amongst a delicate tragicomic vein and a strong meditative propensity, Adriano La Licata investigates – as he describes in his own words – ‘ that sensitive energy which arises between two or more points’.

Peter Nijenhuis interviewed the students that take part in The Cucumber Temple, currently on view at Expoplu, Nijmegen.

Firstly: an introduction and Danni van Amstel about her contribution in the exhibition.

The Cucumber Temple is een tentoonstelling in de Nijmeegse Paraplufabriek van zes studenten van de masteropleiding Fine Art van AKV/St.Joost, geïnspireerd op een gelijknamige tekst van Martijn in ‘t Veld. In de associatieve en ogenschijnlijk van de hak op de tak springende tekst van Martijn in ‘t Veld spelen de kleur groen, meerduidigheid en gedaantewisselingen een hoofdrol. Hoe hebben de zes studenten onder begeleiding van docent en curator Bas van den Hurk in hun bijdrage aan de tentoonstelling de tekst van Martijn in ‘t Veld verbonden met hun eigen onderzoeksvragen?

DANNI VAN AMSTEL: JE KUNT HET SPEL NIET MET IEDEREEN SPELEN

Een masterstudent Fine Art aan Sint Joost dient na ongeveer een half jaar een onderzoeksvraag te schrijven die dienst doet als rode draad tijdens de rest van de tweejarige opleiding. Wat is jouw onderzoeksvraag, of beter gezegd het onderwerp dat je met beeldende middelen onderzoekt? 

Ik heb daar een tijd naar gezocht. Voorheen maakte ik werk naar aanleiding van een bestaande plek. Het was, zoals dat heet site specific. Na dat een tijd gedaan te hebben, voelde ik de behoefte om meer op zich staand, zeg maar sculpturaal werk te maken. Wat me bovendien interesseert is hoe ik de beschouwer bij mijn werk kan betrekken en, bij uitbreiding, hoe mensen überhaupt bij ruimte betrokken raken. Dat bracht me erop om mensen te interviewen die aan het verhuizen zijn. Ik vond die mensen via mijn kennissenkring en sociale media. Ik ging met ze mee als ze hun toekomstige woning voor het eerst bekeken. Wat waren hun ideeën en plannen als ze het zo zagen? Ik ben nu bezig om daar een publicatie van te maken. Wat uit de interviews naar voren komt, is dat veel mensen op de nog lege ruimte die ze zullen gaan bewonen hun gewoontes en verlangens projecteren. Die gewoontes en verlangens hebben veelal hun oorsprong in hun eerste ervaringen, het dagelijkse bewonen van een vroeger huis met het gezin waarin ze opgroeiden. Dat is voor mij een belangrijk gegeven. Het ondersteunt wat over het onderwerp van de menselijke ruimtebeleving en de poëzie van die beleving is geschreven door theoretici als Gaston Bachelard en maakt die theoretische benadering ook begrijpelijk en concreet.

Wat heb je voor deze tentoonstelling gemaakt?

Ik heb heel simpel gekozen voor de kleur groen als uitgangspunt en in Nijmegen op straat naar scherven groen glas gezocht. Het glas heb ik gesmolten in een glasoven. Daardoor zijn de scherpe randen van de scherven vloeiend geworden en de onderzijde van de scherven plat. Het smeltproces is evenwel  binnen de perken gebleven waardoor aan de bovenzijde de oorspronkelijke vorm nog steeds herkenbaar is. Je kunt nog altijd zien dat een stuk glas bijvoorbeeld afkomstig is van de schroefdraad van een fles.

Het werk en het hele idee spreken me aan, maar het is klein en ligt, als iets onbeduidends bij een putje. Ik stond er zojuist al per ongeluk in toen ik met iemand anders stond te praten. Dat mensen je werk niet zien of vatten, is niet denkbeeldig. Hoe doorbreek je dat?

In hoeverre is er iets te doorbreken? Ik zei al dat ik het me interesseert hoe je de toeschouwer aan kunt spreken en kunt betrekken bij je werk. Ik doe dat onder andere door me te verdiepen in hoe mensen in dagelijkse situatie bij ruimtes betrokken zijn. Dat spel wil ik met mijn werk nadrukkelijk aangaan, maar ik denk dat je dat spel niet met iedereen kunt spelen, hoe jammer dat ook is.

Laleh Firoozi (IR) utilizes  many traditional skills, as well as writing and performance, has created her own mythology in the project There was a little bit of devil in her angel eyes. Through her characters, she boldly explores her sexuality with pornographic detail provoking questions not only for the audience but also herself.

Alexandros Kaklamanos

Alexandros Kaklamanos (GR) presents three video works, two of which are formed from personal narratives, mythological symbols and current socio-political issues. Alex uses his body, immediate surroundings and found footage to create these works. They are both hauntingly familiar in their scenery yet dream like in their execution

Yukari Matsumoto

Part of Yukari Matsumoto’s (JP) work encapsulates an extensive body of research surrounding the history, hearsay and folklore of one of the largest and oldest trees in the Netherlands. Exploring this subject she has created a new frame of reference for the tree as a cultural marker and elucidated and expanded upon a field of research of social, cultural and artistic significance which transcends its own site-specificity.

George Korsmit – Sending Out The Gods

Ellen de Bruijne Projects is proud to present Sending Out The Gods, an exhibition of new work by George Korsmit.

In the autumn of 2013 George Korsmit left for Seoul to work with several female South Korean shamans (mudang) and in large part hand his artistic decision-making over to them.
In his work Korsmit usually reduces his role of author to that of intermediary. His part in the creation of the work is limited to establishing a set of rules to follow, using dice to determine the dimensions of the colour fields and a blindfold to select the colours. The outcome is unknown and unpredictable.

For this exhibition George Korsmit has relinquished his authorship to the shamans who conduct their rituals and ceremonies on Mount In Wang in Seoul. The shamans use attributes such as coloured flags, costumes and knives to make contact with spirits of ancestors and gods. Colour plays an important part in these shamanistic rituals, signifying messages from the spirits. The shamans themselves are merely intermediaries in the process. Korsmit asked the South Korean shamans for advice and invited them to choose colours for him, instead of making his usual blind selection.For two weeks Korsmit worked on Mount In Wang. He felt a kinship with the shamans in his own ritualistic experience as an intermediary between the uncertain and the concrete physical work. As with the Korean shamanistic ceremonies, the procedure of executing his rules involves endurance and accuracy, requiring a dedication and concentration that is at least as important as the final result.
The role of the artist here is not as the prosecutor of meaning but as the witness of phenomena – waiting, listening and accepting the uncertain outcome. Meaning emerges as he follows the plan.

The works in the exhibition breathe this concentration on process. On viewing the work you become mesmerized. Whether you look at the round drawings, the video, or sculptures based on previous paintings, the image is elusive, disorienting and impossible to remember. The work involves the viewer, who is caught up in an experience that is difficult to pinpoint. It generates a sense of irrationality, irreducibility and inscrutability. No formal or meaningful analysis makes sense; the colours and shapes captivate the viewer, constantly revealing new relationships. There is no rationale for their configuration. Any contest between form and process, form and anti-form or reason and madness seems ultimately irrelevant. Korsmit’s work allows us the pleasure of participating in a delirium, a deadening of the reasoning faculties, a loss of ‘self’ in the Western sense of the term.

INTERNO4 is an independent organisation founded in Bologna, where it had its exhibition place for about two years. From its very beginning, INTERNO4 intended to be a place for interaction, in a first moment as living and working space of 5 artists and in a second moment when its started working with other young Italian and International artists, bringing their experience in the city of Bologna.

Over two years INTERNO4 has realized twelve events, working with more than thirty Italian and International artists, which ranged from visual arts to experimental music.

At the moment all the components of the original project continue to work in different Italian and International Institutions or independently.

In the course of the last months, the four members of the group, had different kinds of experiences. This motivated the desire of meeting each other again, both in a physical and an experimental way, and share the new knowledge and stimuli that each of them has gained.

To meet a life and project partner through new eyes, equipped of new modalities of practice; all these factors led to QUADRATO, an event that aims to bring together the different energies of INTERNO4 under a new light.

Each person of the group will bring in the exhibition the result of their work, combining it with the one of the others. The theoretical and practical work of every single component will become the construction material of one big installation. Quadrato is a container, opened and flexible, which will not remain a single event, but it aims to be a new step for INTERNO4, a further prototype of event and tool of research.

Bas van den Hurk, one of the tutors of the AKV / St. Joost MFA , is having his solo exhibition at the Hopstreet Gallery in Brussels.

The title of the exhibition stems from the Coolio song featuring 40 Thevz ‘See You When You Get There’, which is based on Johann Pachelbel’s Canon in D Major. It was released in 1997 as the first single from the album My Soul. For Van den Hurk the title refers to the possibility of organising along lines of sensibilities and becoming each other’s witnesses. “I guess, I’ll see you when you see me” sings Coolio at the end; this experience of breaking open a dimension which would not be accessible if it was not possible to share a reality by becoming mutual witnesses, a dimension that is only accessible through a caesura in time and understanding, is at the core of his practice.

One of the most important goals fixed lately by BJCEM is to decrease the distance between the young contemporary artistic production and the art market, creating and establishing a contact between an audience of professionals and collectors and emerging artists of interest.

The exhibition New Future is a further step in this direction (started with the participation to the Art Fairs Swab and The Others), gathering a selection of artists that we’ve presented last september in Nottingham, on the occasion of the World Event Young Artists. The artists are: Jessica Lloyd-Jones (UK), Zoe Giabouldaki (Greece), Alexandros Kaklamanos (Greece), Martin Vongrej (Slovakia), Muna Amareen (Jordan), Karmil Cardone (Italy), Giulia Manfredi (Italy), Laura Skocek (Austria), Akram Al Halabi (Syrian), Fabrizio Cotognini (Italy), Tzion Abraham Hazan (Israel), Igor Bošnjack (Bosnia and Herzegovina) and Moussa Sarr (France).

Organized by the Association Visioni Future, the Museum of Modern Art of Bologna (MAMbo) and BJCEM, curated by the young Manuela Valentini, the exhibition will be hosted from January 18^th to February 17^th, 2013 at the Museum of Art and Science of Palazzo Poggi in Bologna. The event is part of ArtCity Bologna, the cultural program of exhibitions and institutional initiatives organized at Art Fair 2013.

The artists have worked on site-specific interventions made especially for the occasion and their works want to establish a dialogue with the history of the building. Since 1711 Palazzo Poggi has turned into a very efficient center for research, production and dissemination of scientific knowledge, thanks to the efforts of General Luigi Marsili (1658-1730). Nowadays its rooms, frescoed by some of the great painters of the past (among which Pellegrino Tibaldi and Prospero Fontana) host many cabinets that hold specimens of extinct animals species, archaeological finds and the equipment that scientists used for their scientific and anatomical studies.

The exhibition – which is sponsored by the Italian Ministry of Heritage and Culture, the Austrian Federal Ministry for Education,Arts and Culture and the Basilicata region – is at the “piano nobile” of Palazzo Poggi. The antique collections will share their space with contemporary works, realized with modern materials: a show within a show, that encourages the visitor to move freely through the rooms in a sort of “treasure hunt” of unexpected work to be found in unexpected places.
